Neighbouring Towns - Thame Print E-mail

Arriving in Thame for the first time people are often struck by the expanse of the Upper High Street; the boat-shaped High Street owes its origins to Medieval Town Planning and the requirements of the market. Thame has a long and fascinating history and a magnificent built heritage.

The patriot John Hampden was educated in Thame at Lord Williams’s School and died here following the Battle of Chalgrove. It is believed that Shakespeare performed here as a strolling player. Thame has many famous inns, from the haunted Birdcage to The Spread Eagle, made famous by The Innkeeper’s Diary of John Fothergill. J.J.R Tolkein makes reference to Thame in Farmer Giles of Ham and the Irish poet W.B.Yeats once lived here. Today, Thame is a thriving market town: proud of its heritage, yet anxious to look to the future. The newly developed Leisure Centre with the Jubilee Pool provides a first class facility and we look forward to the opening of the Thame Museum in 2005. In September we hold the Thame and Oxfordshire County Show, England’s Greatest One Day Country Show, as well as a three-day fun fair in the High Street.

Thame makes an excellent centre for touring and exploring the region. Oxford is close at hand, as are Blenheim Palace and Waddesdon Manor. London is easily accessible by rail (50 mins) from Thame and Haddenham Parkway and both the Chilterns and the Cotswolds provide rich touring opportunities. Full details are available from the Town’s Tourist Information Centre.
