A WOMAN is thought to have been struck with a weapon in the back of the head and left on the A40 near Witney in the early hours of Monday morning.
The woman was found by a passer-by at about 12.40am near the sliproad off the eastbound A40 dual carriageway into Witney, near the Ducklington roundabout.
The member of public took her to the nearby Tesco Express and Esso garage, in Station Lane, Witney, where staff called an ambulance.
She was then taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, where she was under observation on Tuesday, after being treated for a wound to the back of her head.
Police believe she may have been struck across the back of the head with an unknown object.
A tent was put up to protect the scene, and scenes of crime officers were at the A40 on Monday searching for evidence.
It is thought the woman, who is Czech and speaks little English, was at a bus stop in Carterton less than an hour before she was found.
Det Sgt Howard Berry, of Witney CID, said: "We believe the woman was at a bus stop in Carterton at about midnight, outside the Aviator pub. It is then unclear as to how she came to be on the A40.
