Re:Beckham - 11/01/07 18:36 This really is not a big story - former great on the wane moves to third rate league... so what? If the yanks want to waste all that cash, that's up to them. How sad a player once considered the best of his generation has moved clubs twice and both times it was for commercial rather than footballing reasons. But then Beckham is a brand and not a player as such. And there is NO WAY the contract is worth as much as they say it is. That's just a hyped up figure to make the headlines. More like £5m per year, I'd suggest. Good luck to you Becks... you were very good once. Mywitney - Your total guide to Witney,Oxfordshire - for visitors and locals!

Re:Beckham - 11/01/07 19:08 I'm very curious to see if he does anything for football in the states. He is one expensive marketing campaign!

Re:Beckham - 11/01/07 19:54 This decision to move to the USA shows all Beckham is interested in is his bank account to fund his shallow wannabe celebrity life style.

Alex Ferguson got it exactly right when he shipped Beckham off to Spain and equally McClaren got it right too.

If Beckham had an ounce of self respect or ambition he would have taken a wage drop and moved back to the premiership for a couple of seasons. He hardly needs the money unless posh has some further major cosmetic surgery to pay for.

But instead he's taken the soft option of moving to the USA and by doing so has totally destroyed his credibility as a top flight footballer.

Clifford warns Beckham over US move Friday January 12, 09:55 AM

PR guru Max Clifford has warned David Beckham he is not yet a star in the United States.

Talking to BBC Breakfast News he compared the former England captain's transfer from Real Madrid to LA Galaxy to the attempts to raise the game's profile in the US by legends Pele and George Best. Both ended their playing careers in the States during a push to make the game more popular in the 1970s.

Clifford said: "Football is not big in America, David Beckham is not big in America - football does not mean much."

He added: "This is a new challenge, but Pele and George Best could not manage it."

Clifford - who brokered the deal between Rebecca Loos and the News of the World in April 2004, when she claimed to have had an affair with Beckham - added he thought the move could signal a step away from sport and towards showbusiness in the future.

"He has gone from the centre of the football world to the centre of the showbiz world," he said.

"The LA Galaxy are not a great team. They would struggle in the first division over here. It is a change of direction.

"There are plenty of shops and television studios. Victoria might even bump in to a record producer. Other than that she will be famous for being Mrs Beckham.

"LA is the centre of the movie business so maybe there is a step towards that direction.

"Maybe he wants to go into the movies - if they are silent movies he has a good chance."
