Starting Rehab after ACL surgery - 29/09/06 10:19 Hi everyone,

I had ACL surgery about two weeks ago. (That is what happens after you are playing football and your mind thinks that you are still 20 and your body begs to differ)

This has been the hardest two weeks of my life! I think I am starting to get better and my doctor thinks so too. He suggested I start rehab soon

Anyone have any rehab tricks? How did you cope with the months of rehab? My doctor says it could be nine months until I am back on the field! Did anyone have better results? and when my knee finally heals, will it be almost as good as it once was?

I hope I can get back on my feet soon. If I have to watch one more episode of "Neighbours" or "Doctors" I think I'll go mad!

Re:Starting Rehab after ACL surgery - 30/09/06 11:10 I'm sorry about your surgery - that's rough, when you're used to being active. And I just HATE that part about the mind thinking we're still 20 My mind tells me the same lies ...

I had a back injury years ago and was laid low for several months. I remember that after awhile, I had to really talk strongly to myself to remind myself I was NOT getting old, and I WOULD get better, and I would NOT give up on being able to dance or play tennis again. I believe that our mental state influences our physical state quite a bit. So if I can offer a little advice - post notes on the mirror, or write in a journal or put something visible around you as you recuperate, that will remind you that better times are coming. Remind yourself this is only temporary. Tell yourself that you WILL be back on the field when it's time ... do whatever you can to strengthen your determination to get back to doing what is important to you.

I hope for the best for you

Re:Starting Rehab after ACL surgery - 30/09/06 11:59 mel098,

Thank you for the kind words! I didn't even think about the mental side of things. All my doctor and I talked about was the physical excercises I was going to be doing.

The mental part really does play a big factor. I can think of many occasions where I felt great one day and run down a few days later. Nothing physical really changed during that time, only my mental state.

So maybe while my knee is healing I can make the rest of myself sronger. Perhaps it is time to turn off the telly a read some more.

Re:Starting Rehab after ACL surgery - 02/10/06 05:27 Um, yeah! It's hard to avoid watching TV a lot when you're recuperating. But this would be a great time to stock up on some good books and magazines you usually don't have time to read. I found out that daytime TV is really, really awful here

Also, did you ever build model cars or airplanes when you were a kid? Maybe you can try that, to keep your mind and hands busy while you aren't able to play football

When I was at home with my back injury, it was very difficult because I was used to going to work every day and being active. My brain sort of turned to mush for a couple of weeks ... then when I started feeling better, I got a big stack of books and magazines from the library and turned of the TV. Made a big difference

Good luck to you, sorry I don't know anything about actual exercises and stuff to help.
