Are vegetarians smarter? - 16/12/06 13:19 Did you see this? Very interesting!

(HealthDay News) -- As a child's IQ rises, his taste for meat in adulthood declines, a new study suggests.

British researchers have found that children's IQ predicts their likelihood of becoming vegetarians as young adults -- lowering their risk for cardiovascular disease in the process. The finding could explain the link between smarts and better health, the investigators say.

"Brighter people tend to have healthier dietary habits," concluded lead author Catharine Gale, a senior research fellow at the MRC Epidemiology Resource Centre of the University of Southampton and Southampton General Hospital.

Recent studies suggest that vegetarianism may be associated with lower cholesterol, reduced risk of obesity and heart disease. This might explain why children with high IQs tend to have a lower risk of heart disease in later life.

Re:Are vegetarians smarter? - 16/12/06 13:28 Wow...that is interesting! Being a vegetarian has become quite common, hasn't it? There are three students in my daughter's class that don't eat any meat at all. They're only 10! My daughter is not one of them! LOL!

Re:Are vegetarians smarter? - 18/12/06 18:41 Well, these seem to be some very interesting hypotheses, but I'm not sure it would be that cut and dried. There are many reasons for a healthier lifestyle and even living in a small town such as Witney might be less stressful and therefore healthier overall. I just feel there would be many corporate executives that just 'grab and run' their food, and therefore eat less healthfully, although they might prefer a vegetarian lifestyle. Time in finding and preparing food, especially when one travels in business can be more difficult and there are many reasons, as least to me, why someone would be living a healthier lifestyle than others.

Just my opinion,

Re:Are vegetarians smarter? - 19/12/06 15:16 Klara,
I agree that lifestyle's as a whole have become much more unhealthy than in the past. I think the point of the article was that intelligence is linked with making better decisions in what you consume. I found it interesting that that they made the connection between a healthier diet and vegetarianism (is that a word?). My understanding has always been that a balanced healthy diet has to include lean meats. I guess I am behind the times.

Re:Are vegetarians smarter? - 19/12/06 16:01 Hi Summer,

I guess I'm just too 'corporate' to agree totally with it. While good choices in foods are probably more well understood perhaps by those that are more intelligent, I think that the time factor for those that work at higher end jobs defeats their good intentions many times. It has for me anyway. I just felt perhaps the author had missed a variable there that could've been included. It WAS an interesting piece, I just immediately questioned the critical values used.

I suppose I should focus more on my diet than this! LOL
