What are Web's societal, scientific consequences? - 04/11/06 20:15 As the World Wide Web continues its explosive growth, a group of academics, including the Web's inventor, have started an interdisciplinary effort to study the scientific and societal consequences of wiring the planet together.

Re:What are Web's societal, scientific consequence - 12/12/06 14:03 I know this is an older discussion but I just felt I had to jump in as this is something I've actually thought about myself.

Although what wizkid said is true, that the findings will change by the time they complete the study, it's really apparent that the Internet has changed society in general. More of us now just e-mail and text our lives away and I personally miss the one on one with other humans that was more prolific even as little as five years ago.

I may be in the minority there but think a study will be interesting.

Re:What are Web's societal, scientific consequence - 12/12/06 15:08 Klara,
I agree with you 100%. People tend to do most of their communicating online. Emails, text messages etc. Nobody writes a letter anymore and people are using the telephone less and less.
It also concerns me the level of cruelty used my young ones on the internet. Have you seen on the news these smear campaigns being used as revenge by young people. Rumor starting is not just confined to the halls of the school anymore...it's worldwide.
I am interested to see what these researchers find. I think technology has changed us more than we think.

Re:What are Web's societal, scientific consequence - 12/12/06 19:35 I agree with Summer and kaerae above. The changes can be so small over time that we don't even realize that we've changed as a society, and then one day, boom, we find that there are larger changes in us and society as a whole. Sort of a build up effect.

Re:What are Web's societal, scientific consequence - 12/12/06 19:57 I also think different groups of people feel the effects differently. A study may help an elderly man appreciate how technology has changed young people, for example. And vice versa.
