Let's not have a Holy war about software tools! Each tool has its positives and negatives. We have seen that some have had good experiences and some have had bad experiences...
I admit I helped us start going down this path...
Sorry Melissa, us techies are very passionate and can get carried away when we get talking about software...

Picking through everyone's posts, there are a few clear suggestions:
1. Make use of a software firewall. There are several different flavors. One is called "Zone Alarm". Personal firewall software helps keep the bad guys from getting in and if the bad guys are already in it helps keep them from getting out to cause more problems.
2. Spyware is a real problem today and needs to be considered. There are an assortment of products available for detecting and removing spyware. People have varrying opinions on the effectiveness of these products. There are many places online where you read a discussion on the pros and cons.
3. Your computer stores a lot of settings and information in a place called the registry. Changes made here can affect your entire computer. There are relatively inexpensive products you can purchase that will help maintain the integrity of this critical area. One is called "Registry First Aid"
4. Some form of antivirus is a must. There are several different varieties. As with the spyware paragraph above people have varrying opinions on the merrit and effectiveness of these products. There is also plenty of discussions on the pros and cons of different brands online.
5. If all else fails your best option may be to start all over again or roll back to a previous restore point. This action can have some rather drastic effects (loss of important data and photos, loss of settings...)
I would leave all but the most basic restore options to a professional. (Such as Discoflash and mywitney's sister company Neons Edge, http://www.neonsedge.com/home.html ) A professional can make sure the proper steps are followed to protect as much of your data as possible.
