Email help? - 01/11/06 19:56
Hi all, I have a problem I'm trying to sort out for a friend and I wondered if I can get some help from someone who's more techy than me? Thanks in advance ...
This is how my pal describes his problem:
My computer is sending unauthorized e-mails. They are not being sent to addresses in my Outlook Contacts. Whatever is hacking or has infected my PC has its own list. When I first noticed this a week or so ago, I was not current in my Windows Updates, but I was current and fully running Norton anti-virus. The only thing on Norton's that I always turn off is scanning outgoing e-mail. When I realized I may have a problem, I turned that back on and every now and then I see Norton scanning an outgoing message, even though I'm not sending one and even when Outlook isn't running. I actually first noticed a problem when Internet Explorer kept closing. When I ran task manager I noticed that IE kept turning itself on, but it never showed up in the Task Bar. Since then, I have installed all of the Windows updates. I deleted IE6 and installed IE7. I've tried checking for viruses using Norton, using Symantec's web site and using Avast anti-viral program. Nothing ever comes up. I though maybe I was being hacked instead of being infected, so I changed my static IP (most computers in the office have fixed IPs via the router software) and made sure I had no open ports. I'm still sending messages. I was not sending anything, or even attempting to send anything, when I did not have IE installed, and when I physically unplugged my computer from the router.
I'm at a loss on this one. I'm hoping one of you computer guru types might be able to point us in a direction?
Thanks very much.
Melissa
