Robin Hood, King Arthur, Aragorn? - 31/10/06 20:53 Ever fancied yourself as one of these characters?
Or perhaps some other similar swashbuckling type?

Or perhaps you just have an interest in medieval history?

While we would steer you away from what Hollywood and the BBC might think is medieval, we will teach you how to fight safely with a sword - and other medieval weapons.

The Companions of the Crow are a small, friendly medieval combat and living history re-enactment group, based in Crawley, just north of Witney. We practice every Sunday at the New Inn. During the summer we spend our weekends putting on displays around the country. We do everything from small private shows, school fetes etc where it is just our group, through to large scale battle re-enactments with over 2500 fully armoured men at arms.

None of the fighting is choreographed. We will train you to fight safely and within the rules of combat.

Re:Robin Hood, King Arthur, Aragorn? - 01/11/06 19:21 The next battle is not until next year. However, as I said in the original post, we practice at the Crawley Inn (New Inn) on Sunday afternoons.

Note that to take part in training and shows you must be over 16.

Have a look at the website - www.companionsofthecrow.co.uk for more information

Re:Robin Hood, King Arthur, Aragorn? - 02/11/06 17:58 Looks like a lot of fun - do women get to learn sword fighting too? (didn't see any in the photos...)

I'd rather be Robin Hood than Maid Marian - he had more fun!

Re:Robin Hood, King Arthur, Aragorn? - 02/11/06 18:10 Just wear a helmet and a not so form fitting coat of armor... no one will ever know the difference during a battle

And if they do say anything... well, a man would be a plain fool to mess with a determined lady with a sword

Re:Robin Hood, King Arthur, Aragorn? - 02/11/06 19:23 Feebee,

Yes, women do fight. We have three women in our group who regularly fight with swords. Two of then donning full suits of armour to do so. One of them, my girlfriend, also takes part in full contact tournaments along with myself and about 20 other people from around the country.

In the middle ages it was not very common at all for women to take part in battles or tournaments, however it was not unknown and there are several accounts of female combatants.

Within re-enactment there are quite a few women who do archery or man the gun crews.
