First dates are tough to gauge. I guess I should say it's pretty easy to tell when it's gone bad for yourself, but knowing if a date was really mutually enjoyable and promising or not is tough.
A lot of times, people confuse courtesy with chemistry. I've gone on dates before where I was sure we really hit it off and even made plans for "next time" but ended up never seeing each other again... And then I've gone on mediocre dates where a kiss was expected, probably because "that's what's supposed to happen at the end of a date".
So I've adopted the approach of not reading into first dates too much. Just go out, and focus on having fun where ever you are together doing whatever you are doing and not worry so much how it went...that question will answer itself in time...
Call him and ask him if he wants to go out again
