Can private firms improve the NHS? - 05/06/08 01:03 Executives from private companies could be brought in to run failing NHS trusts in England. The government is exploring a range of options, including bringing in managers from better-performing NHS trusts to improve failing hospitals.

Would private sector management run hospitals more efficiently? Does this amount to privatising the NHS?

Re:Can private firms improve the NHS? - 05/06/08 07:43 The NHS was instigated as a fair way of providing free health care 'from the cradle to the grave'.

It used to be the envy of the world. The ills of the failing NHS have largely been inflicted by wrong headed government policy from both major parties. Private sector is usually a byword for wasted money and inefficiency. Where services have been tendered out by NHS hospitals eg cleaning, laundry and meal provision, the results have not been beneficial to the patients or staff as services have been downgraded and costs have increased. This is privatization by stealth. I have mixed feelings about my local hospital, it is badly managed but most of the staff are wonderful and do their best under very difficult circumstances and full privatization would only make a bad situation worse.

Re:Can private firms improve the NHS? - 05/06/08 11:45 Great,bring it on ,the sooner the better .Get rid of those useless lazy personnel who are just biding their time awaiting their pensions ,only hire non union staff and you will see change for the better. Far too many sick notes in this monolithic establishment. Less nurses more clinical and clerical staff hired by ability only ,get rid of the dead wood ,early retirement and six week holidays ,watch them leave in their droves,if they strike give them 90 days notice. Sorry if you happen to be a good worthwhile member of the NHS but you have stood by and watched this over unionized sick note of an industry become third world

Whilst i would welcome that change Technoman, i cannot see it working that way. They would just sell of the less profitable parts of the NHS keeping only the parts that make money i fear.

I have worked for the NHS in 1970 and my experience is very different from yours. I will not try to defend the indefensible and I agree that some of what you say has an element of truth but why throw the baby out with the bathwater. Even you have to admit that there are some 'good, worthwhile' people working for the NHS. Mywitney - Fun place to hang out in Witney
