Are you worried about security online? - 24/04/08 00:16 According to the BBC, banking industry data shows that losses through the internet, phone and mail crime ran to £290.5m in 2007.

Are you worried about the safety of your details? Do you think organisations do enough to keep your records safe? Should there be a minister for internet crime? Have you been affected by internet fraud or identity theft?

Re:Are you worried about security online? - 24/04/08 06:21 I have never bought anything online because I don't trust that my details will be safe.

I think a minister of internet crime is a great idea. Identity theft isn't the only form of internet crime, there are so many scam artists, kidnappings and other stories we hear about on a daily basis! Part of the problem is that there is no control on the internet. While this is great in some ways ( we can talk freely on forums like this about how crap the government is etc), it's dangerous too.

Re:Are you worried about security online? - 24/04/08 07:58 I am more worried about the security of my details that the government holds.

Re:Are you worried about security online? - 24/04/08 08:48 Something very few people know is that if you buy online, you have to check BOTH of these:

1. You must see a padlock in the browser
2. ALSO you must verify the the URL is exactly right, for example ******** not amazoon.com

also:
- never do buying, selling or banking over a wireless connection
- use only large, known vendors like Amazon, play.com, John Lewis
- get the latest free patches from ******** /> - use an antivirus package

These few things might help but nothing is secure online or offline.

Re:Are you worried about security online? - 24/04/08 09:14 I had my card details used illegally on the internet. I had only ever used reputable well known sites previously, and look after all my data by shredding etc.

I reported the fraud to the bank, and they wanted a police crime reference. I reported it to the police, they weren't interested. I eventually got my money back, 5 months later and after a lot of personal distress.

The police, government and financial institutions all need to agree on a standard process to protect innocent victims.

Some great tips, thanks! I never even thought about wireless danger and I love buying from Amazon... Scary what can happen though!

Nightowl that sounds like a horror story. Maybe thats why the suggestion of an Internet Minister of Safety isn't half bad. At least there would be a department co-ordinating everyone.
