Re:anti-depressants and stigma - 27/02/08 15:10 The doctors put a lot down to "depression".
There is clinical depression. Tablets might help, but a lot more is needed to help with that like therapy and councelling and ... But I don't believe that half the people claiming depression suffer this serious illness.

Most people suffer from modern society - pressures, lifestyle, ... These need life councelling and putting their life in perspective and making a few changes. It is not an illness but a 'not coping'.

Just my 2cents

Re:anti-depressants and stigma - 27/02/08 18:01 If you've never suffered from clinical depression, nor been close to someone who has, then your opinion carries little weight.

This new research is very, very interesting. I have a friend who is clinically depressed but is very anti-drugs - they're just not for him. On the other hand, some of my family are clinically depressed and cannot survive without the drugs.

In any case, something is needed by the sufferer, even if it's just a placebo. It's the diagnosis that's important.

Re:anti-depressants and stigma - 27/02/08 19:04 Having personally seen the effects of anti-depressants on a close family member, I am of the opinion that they cause greater harm than good in some instances. With a lot of anit-depressant medication there seems to be a process of trial and error to determine which drugs have the least negative side effects such as tremours, headaches, increased feelings of anxiety and depression on the patient. I agree with the decision to have more trained professionals deal with depression via counselling

Re:anti-depressants and stigma - 27/02/08 21:18 I became depression from heavy stress earlier this year, and took one of those tablets for 3 weeks. It had side effect, but I felt it worked for me even during that short period. But the most effective treatment is support from family and colleagues, and do exercises. I realised that a balanced, good lifestyle is the key.

Re:anti-depressants and stigma - 27/02/08 21:22 Wow this really is an interesting mix of opinions!

I suppose my problem here is actually getting him to get help. It's all very well telling someone to 'buck up and smile' but I am pretty sure he has a chemical imbalance. It's been months of misery and there's no sign of him rejoining the world. It's too terrible to watch from the sidelines.

Any idea's how to broach the subject of help/making change with an "old school" man?
