anti-depressants and stigma - 26/02/08 15:23 I know someone who is clinically depressed and needs medication but refuses it because he believes there is a huge stigma attached. (which I think is absolute BOLLOCKS!)

DO you think this is true? Is there a stigma attached to taking them? Have you ever taken them and did it help?

Re:anti-depressants and stigma - 26/02/08 16:11 I don't think there is a stigma to it at all! For many people, anti-depressants really help.

I've taken them and benefitted greatly! For a long time I resisted help, when I reached my own personal low I was forced to make some changes. Medication being one of them!

I'm not sure what you could do to convince someone who doesn't want convincing. The decision to get help is a very personal one Has your friend spoken to a doctor about his depression or is he in denial?

I don't think there's a stigma to it. Maybe for some 'old school' men, but the rest of us are cool with it I am sure... I wouldn't think any less of someone after I found out they were taking them. Would you?

Re:anti-depressants and stigma - 26/02/08 20:50 I don't think there's a stigma to it at all. A lot of my friends are taking/have taken medication like that, it doesn't change my opinion of them in any way!

Re:anti-depressants and stigma - 27/02/08 10:10 Depression? Stuff and nonsense!! I simply don't believe in it, nor do I believe people can get depressed because of bereavement. Death happens, go the the funeral and then get on with your life.

Enjoy life and smile more.

Re:anti-depressants and stigma - 27/02/08 11:37 I seems to bit agree with Karen

Do small things that make people feel good. Study the reactions of those around you, and act toward them the way you wish they would act toward you. It really works. Instead of walking around with a mug on, smile gently, make eye contact with people. Don't avoid people. Soften your own barriers. Most of the time those barriers just make you up tight and unhappy, anyway. Taking drugs will not help the reasons you get depressed, changing your own outlook might. Try being kind.
