Hucclecote Ladies 12 – 24 Witney 14th Oct - 22/10/07 10:13
14th October Match Report - Hucclecote Ladies 12 – 24 Witney Angels The Angels made the short trip to Gloucestershire to play a friendly as their league game had been cancelled. Unfortunately the Angels only had 14 players for the game. The Angels back line looked almost brand new with the centre roles being played by two forwards Jess P and Catherine. Like the Coalville game the Angels started well and got an early score on the board. The Angels had already had a disallowed try after some great work by the backs but it was deemed a forward pass. A few minutes later Hucclecote gave a penalty at the ruck but the ref played for advantage which saw lolly pick up the bouncing ball out of the ruck to run under the posts to score. The Angels had to dig in hard as they were lacking one from the scrum and Liz was the new prop. The ball came out from the scrum and Bob sent it out to the backs who played it to the wing to see Sophie pop to Smorley who scored in the corner. Just before half-time the Angels defended well but it only took so long before Hucclecote managed to drive over the line to score. They also converted. In the build-up to this play the Angels were down to only 13 as Erin received an injury. The half-time score was 10 – 7 to the Angels. The Angels perked up again knowing how hard the second half would be as they were lacking two players. The team talk was good and they got their heads up and continued playing structured and enjoyable rugby. Jess had been moved back into the pack to make up 7 for the scrum and the Backs bought Smorley into the line to help them out. Even with the shifting and the line-outs not being spot on, it didn’t take long for the girls to get another score on the board. The forwards rucked well and were winning the scrums against the head and this led to the Angels pulling in their opposite numbers to make room for the Backs to move. Once a couple of phases had passed Lolly ran through the defence and tried to pass to Cath who couldn’t quite get the ball as it was so low, but Pip picked it up and popped to Smorley who got her second try of the game. Bob converted the try. Hucclecote didn’t manage to get their kick to reach the 10 metre line so the Angels chose a scrum, this worked well as once again the Angels drew in players and eventually got the ball back to Smorley who ran in another try to make her hat-trick. Bob converted. The Angels calmed the play down and used their fitness to keep Hucclecote pinned in their own half for most of the second period. Hucclecote eventually broke through the tough defence and after ten minutes of constant pressure they managed to get over the line although it did look like a possibility of being held up. They did not convert. The Angels managed to dig in hard for the last few minutes of the game and defended well until Hucclecote knocked on and the final Whistle blew. The Angels deserved to win and put in a performance which they will need to keep up going into their next league game. Goz even showed a glimpse of a smile. Player of the Match: Liz (Forwards) and Lolly (Backs). First XI: Donna, Pip, Liz, Debs, Erin, Kelly, Teresa, Bob, Lolly(Cpt), Jess, Cath, Sophie, Shellie, Smorley

Coalville 24 - 19 Witney Angels 7th oct - 22/10/07 10:14
7th October Coalville 24 - 19 Witney Angels This game shows the importance of consistency. The Angels played their first league game away at Coalville and seemed to dominate periods of the match but also fell off at the wayside letting a team who have just come up from Midlands 3 take the points. For the first time in Angels history 3 members of the same family were on the pitch at the same time,Mrs P,Emma and Jess. The Angels started brightly and within forty seconds had managed to secure a ball from the line-out and shipped it to the backs to find Lolly looping around the side who ran in a comfortable try and it was also converted. The Angels seemed in high spirits but only moments later from the restart found themselves all over the place and let in a try. The rest of the half was dominated by Coalville who kept their structure and pushed for another try which happened through sheer pressure on the Angels. Coalville also managed to gain a penalty which they converted. The Angels lost one of their new players Sam who had to go off with a groin injury meaning Liz came on and Kelly moved to the backs. The Half-time score was 13 - 7 to Coalville. The Angels were forced to take Mrs. P off the pitch as she was suffering with a foot problem, Catherine came on to boost the pack again. The Angels started very well in the second half and within minutes they had managed to get Smorley the ball and she ran in a wonderful try under the posts which lolly converted. A few moments later the forwards pressed from a line-out and did a rolling maul very well to see Jess P drop over the line for a try leaving the score at 13 - 19 to the Angels. The Angels almost scored again when new winger Elaine (fraggle) went over the line in the corner but unfortunately her foot had gone out into touch and was bought back for a line-out. However; what happened in the first half began to happen again. Coalville worked themselves back into the Angels half and applied pressure. The Angels discipline was not good as they conceded penalty after penalty. This left Coaville to attack from 10 metres out. The Angels backs defended well but a second late on a tackle saw Lolly be sin-binned. The Angels did not re-coup themselves and an inexperienced back line was left to deal with the pressure. It was not long until Coalville managed to get themselves through the forwards to score in the corner. Five minutes later a poor attempted clearance saw them dive over the line again to take the lead to 24 - 19. With ten minutes left and all players back on the field, the Angels did not have enough drive to get them the try they need to win. In the dying moment it looked possible but a knock-on brought the game to an end and the Angels were left disappointed with their result, knowing that if they had played consistently they would have won this comfortably. Goz did not say much at the end but the girls know it will be a tough week at training and they have to look to beat Malvern Angels at the Hailey Ground next Sunday to even get a glimmer of a smile on the Coach's face. I think next week's team will be chomping at the bit to get on the pitch and show the coach what they can do. They need a better team performance and to keep their structure on the pitch if they have any chance of winning 'The Battle of the Angels'. Players of the Match: Debbie (Forward), Mary & Smorley (backs) First XV: Elaine (capt), Pip, Donna, Mrs. P, Jess P, Kelly, Debs, Teresa, Mary, Lolly, Emma P, Sophie, Elaine (Fraggle), Sam, Smorley. Subs: Cath and Liz.

Old Reds 0 - 44 Witney Angels 16th sept - 22/10/07 10:15
16thseptember Old Reds 0 - 44 Witney Angels
The Angels continued their pre-season with a impressive win over Old Reds. Both teams have met before and it has always been a close contest but thanks to being disciplined and focussed the Angels took an emphatic win.
The Angels received the first kick-off and were going down hill which is where they took most advantage. It didn't take long for the Angels to break to deadlock and to claim their first try. The forwards set-up a maul which drove for 5 metres before being shipped out to the backs, whom quickly passed it down the line until Emma broke through the defence and then passed to lolly out of the tackle for her to score under the posts. The try was converted. The next try came only a few moments later as the Witney forwards took control of the scrums and line-outs. The Backs then received the ball and with a few miss moves got the ball to Smorley who charged into the corner for another try. The Angels broke down any attack started by Old Reds and managed to turn-over the ball on many occassions. The next try was a bit messy from the Angels as the ball flew out of the ruck uncontrollably to the side. Lolly managed to poke it through with her foot and tapped it again before falling on the ball over the line for her second try. The fourth try came a few moments later when the forwards had created quick ball from the kick-off for the backs to run off. Shellie and Smorley supported one another passing to and fro only to be stopped a few metres away from the tryline. The forwards rucked over and Mary(top right) popped the ball to Lolly who charged through the defence for her hat-trick. The fifth and final try came from mary who thoroughly deserved to score as she played a good game even though she was carrying a groin strain. The forwards were rucking well and the backs were bringing the ball back into them as they wanted to draw the Old Reds team out of the back line to give more room. the forwards controlled the ball very well and drove 10 metres before Mary picked off the back of the maul and weaved her way round the remaining winger and fullback to score under the posts. The Try was converted. The half-time whistle blew and the Angels found themselves 34 - 0 up.Goz gave the team-talk about keeping our discipline now we were going up hill and he didn't expect us to concede. The Angels were revved up again and they got themselves back on the pitch.A few changes were made with Kelly coming back off the wing to play flanker and Catherine was put into the backs. liz (right) also came on to replace the hurting Teresa but as the game progressed more injuries kept cropping up.From the kick-off the Angels kept the pressure on as they won the ball back from it. The backs kept bringing the ball back to the forwards to keep the game at close quarters and controlled until a gap would appear. The Angels did this over and over again jsut to keep the pressure on the Redcliffians pack. It took about ten minutes of hard attacking and some defending before the next try went over. This time Catherine broke from the maul and went over the line, which was deserved by the Angels pack. The next try came a few moments later as the backs span the ball out rather than bringing it back in. They looped and Emma found herself in the corner reaching for the line with the ball in one hand and scoring. The next kick-off saw Donna take a big hit which ended up with her having to be taken off the pitch and an Ambulance called. The Angels also then lost Shellie as she pulled both quads and Mary was off with her groin in too much agony to continue. Mary had worsened it when she stopped Old reds only break-away and made an important tackle into touch before the Angels tryline. Liz played very well as she had to play in the forwards and backs in her first ever game for Witney and she showed that her ability will grow and she will be an important player to the Angels along with jess in the coming season. The Angels saw themselves play the last ten minutes with 12 against 15. They did well but with tiredness creeping in, it became a bit mucky. In the end Bob kicked the ball from the back of the scrum and it only made five metres, but through a lucky drop, Heidi picked up the ball and passed it down the line for Smorley to run in the last try of the game. The final whistle went and the Angels could relax.
A good solid performance from the Angels with only some improvements to be made to the rucks and mauls still. The discipline was good and the team play was impressive. The Angels deserved to win by the amount they did and also deserved the shut-out for their defensive work. Donna was given the all clear later that day, and she has severe bruising to her hip which will see her out for a few weeks, but still better than a dislocated hip. Shellie will be back training and Mary will need a bit of rest to let her groin heal. Overall a good performance from the Angels and they will hope to take that into their next game in a couple of weeks time. Goz will also now be able to work on any issues before they get to their first league game.
Man of the Match's: Kelly (Forwards), Mary (Backs) and Liz (Virgin). Team: Elaine, Pip, Donna, Bob, Jess, Cath, Debbie, Teresa, Mary, Lolly, Kelly, Heidi, Emma, Shellie, Smorley. Subs: Liz.
