Witney bridge reopens - 24/07/07 12:08 BRIDGE Street in Witney is now open to traffic, four days after the River Windrush burst through and flooded the road and surrounding homes and businesses.

Other bridges hit by surging water on the River Evenlode, at Charlbury and Finstock, have also been reopened even though parts of the parapets have been washed away.

The bridge on the A361 at Shipton-under-Wychwood has also reopened to traffic.

THE emergency rescue centres at Long Hanborough and Carterton have now closed, but anyone still requiring temporary accommodation should visit the West Oxfordshire District Council Offices at Elmfield, New Yatt Road, Witney. The council is urging residents not to go direct to local quarries for sand or to buy sandbags from visiting lorries. They are available free to households from the official drop-off sites. Alternatively, telephone on 01993 861000 or after 7pm 01993 705056.
