Device is called a pedometer(spelling?). The cheapest ones have a spring in it that hits a ticker everytime you step. (If a pen was attached to your side you would draw an up and down wave...)
The more pricey ones have some electronics for motion detection.
What they should do is build them into shoes... Remember shoes that had air pumps on them? How about shoes with a display and buttons.... And for the ultra model your shoes could have a speaker and give you encouragement... "You were doing so good, keep it up!" or "slow down, you're going to hurt your self..."
